Advocacy for students

Delani Rodriguez majors in English Education at Taylor University, found her calling through her involvement in youth ministry. During her time teaching Bible lessons, she noticed that many children were struggling with reading. This experience inspired her to pursue a career in education, with the goal of helping people read and write effectively to broaden their perspective through literature. Her passion for literature can be traced back to her high school English teacher, Mr. Chadwick. His unique teaching style, which encouraged group discussions and allowed students to explore their interests, sparked her love for learning and writing in an unexpectedly enjoyable way.

But Delani's commitment to education goes beyond personal fulfillment. She is acutely aware of the life-changing impact of a good education and the challenges marginalized communities face in accessing quality resources. She emphasizes the role of the education system in perpetuating systemic racism, and this awareness drives her dedication to making a difference.

Delani's ambition to be a leader led her to become a Pursue Scholar, where she could enhance her leadership skills. She's grateful for the guidance of mentors Derick and Megan, who helped her decide to stay at Taylor University during a period of uncertainty. Other areas of encouragement came from her family, who kept her grounded. "I’m very outspoken, stubborn, and bold. I think they always bring me back to Christ and remind me that I’m not here because of myself and anything I did, but because of Christ." As she approaches graduation, she values Pursue's focus on nurturing servant leaders through mentorship and tailored programs.

Looking ahead, Delani aspires to teach and eventually explore opportunities in higher education. She plans to get her masters in sociology and possibly teach on social issues using English as an outlet to achieve this. “I am hoping to get my Ph.D. in organizational leadership maybe. Then, I would love to teach in a big university. I'm hoping to go to school at the University of Houston, and maybe teach classes in Texas but I don’t really know where the Lord will call me when it comes to teaching,” said Rodriguez . As far as giving back to her community she plans to stay connected with her youth group and mentor someone from Chicago, regardless of where she lives. Delani is committed to promoting competency and empowering her students, reminding them that they are not defined by their identity and encouraging them to break free from systemic constraints.

Stories like Delani are the reason we are grateful for partners like you. Your gift to Pursue Scholars today will be actively investing in young Chicago leaders and help them embark on a journey that will truly lead to change.
